In honor of National Pizza Day (and hello to those who dare to put pineapples on pizza… I am definitely not judging you) there are six things I need on and with my pizza to reach nirvana. While these are not listed in any particular order, they have served me well and should help your pizzas (whether ordered or baked at home) in the very near future.
Do not play games with my cheese. Make sure it’s hot and in surplus because a pizza that skimps on cheese is a glorified breadstick with marinara sauce.
I don’t care if they are green peppers, olives, red peppers, mushrooms, or more olives (my fave) but I have to get vegetables on my pizza. If I’m making it at home or grabbing one to go, I’m asking for extra because the flavor is definitely packed in the veggies.
Growing up we rarely ate chicken on our pizza, but now chicken is one of the primary things I add to my pizza. Maybe it’s the fact that I feel less guilty about the chicken before I say… “sausage, bacon, pepperoni, etc…” but chicken beats out all those other meat toppings for me.
Where has this been all my life and all the previous pizzas I’ve had in this lifetime? Basil is amazing! Whether minced down or whole leaves, try it. It’s nutrient packed and with a slight minty appeal- basil is sweet, savory, and the best herb I can add on top of my pizza… I am, of course, assuming there is already plenty enhancing the sauce.
Spice is a way of life. I will either add crushed red pepper to pizza or include some spicy peppers in the veggies, but give me heat.
Do I really need to explain this one?
Happy National Pizza Day!! Toppings are not optional.
